Check out the stunning Architecture Aqaba Fort Part of Aqaba’s unique charm is not just its seaside setting, but also its great architecture and historic gems, such as the Aqaba Fortress or Aqaba Castle (also known as the Mamluk Castle). This castle narrates the story of Ayla (Aqaba’s old name); it was originally built by the 10 Crusaders in the 12th century. However, it was destroyed in 1187 when Salh-aldin recaptured Ayla. The fortress was then completed and rebuilt in 1517 (early 16th century) under the Mamluk Sultan Qanswah al-Ghawri. Initially used as a travelers’ inn or ‘Khan,’ it served as a resting place for Muslim pilgrims en route to Mecca, providing them with the opportunity to rest and replenish their supplies for the remainder of their journey. Don’t worry, all this information and much more is provided at the location; the fortress is equipped with informative signage in multiple languages, ensuring you won’t need a secret decoder ring to unravel its fascinating history. Also, don’t forget to spot the Arabic inscription in the gateway showing the date of construction. Pro Tip: If you’re at the fortress, it is a short walk to the adjacent Aqaba Archaeological Museum, housed in Sharif Hussein’s former residence. To better plan your trip, note that the fortress is open Sunday to Thursday from 08:00 to 17:00 (and until 16:00 in winter), and Friday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 (and until 16:00 in winter). The entrance fee is 3 JOD ($4.25). Due to the heat, it is always recommended to do your Aqaba sightseeing in the morning or afternoon. Location: Al Hafayer Park, Aqaba https://maps.app.goo.gl/8mpqFzwSnPcuRNKb8 Facilities: the castle is well serviced, they have a bathroom and a small café  Transportation: You can take a shuttle from your hotel or a yellow taxi for ($5-$10) one-way trip. 11 In Aqaba, the adventures are as endless as the sea itself, Don’t miss a stroll through the enchanting lanes of the Old Souk, oh and don’t forget to check the Souk by the Sea only on Fridays, there’s so many nice things, great food, and music.
